At 09.38 hours on 1 Oct 1942 the unescorted Empire Tennyson (Master Alfred Ernest Wright) was torpedoed and sunk by U-175 southeast of Trinidad. The U-boat erroneously reported the ship as Tennessee. The master and three crew members were lost, one of them being Neil MacPherson. 30 crew members and six gunners were picked up by the American gunboat USS PG-58 and landed at Port of Spain, Trinidad.
